Platform build · The Institute for Performance and Learning

One platform for a national association.

I built an association management platform for Canada's national association for workplace learning and performance professionals: membership, payments, certification, conference and mail, in English and French, on one platform the Institute owns and runs.

The challenge

A not-for-profit with no IT department.

The Institute is run by a volunteer Board. When its legacy membership system fell away, the member records, payments and email went with it.

Member history was recovered from receipts and payment records, and the new platform went live while the association kept operating. Volunteers and a small team now renew a member, invoice a company, answer the mailbox and approve a certification in a browser, without a vendor ticket.

The platform in numbers

3,465
member records
889
active memberships
1,269
certifications on record
8,568
payment transactions recovered and reconciled

As of October 2026. English and French throughout.

What was built

Five working parts, one record per person.

Membership

Join and renew online across five membership types plus corporate group accounts. Reduced rates are protected by a verified work, government or school email. A member portal holds profile, receipts, certification status and a second sign-in address.

Certification and Cohort Centre

The whole path to the national CTDP designation in one place: eligibility, reference requests, scheduled cohorts, a knowledge exam engine, a separate assessor portal with conflict-of-interest declarations and appeals, and an audit-ready record.

Conference and events

Ticketing with member and group rates, membership plus ticket in one checkout, an exhibitor and sponsor portal with booth badge scanning, and an events calendar with registration for chapter and national events.

Staff and Board console

Members, money, mail, certification and settings in one console. Shared mailboxes with assignment and replies from role addresses, a combined invoice ledger, and an audit log of every change.

Member assistant

A bilingual assistant on the site that answers from a reviewed knowledge base. An answer carries a verified mark only when a person has checked it.

Career Centre

A job board with paid posting packages, job alerts and application tracking.

Under the hood

Edge-first, tested before every release.

The Institute's operations control room: all systems nominal, with status tiles for the application, database, payments, email, bot check, audit chain and security shield, and a summary of the last 24 hours

Edge

  • Cloudflare Workers
  • Pages
  • WAF
  • CDN cache
  • Turnstile

Applications run on Cloudflare Workers with D1 for the database, R2 for private files, Pages for the public site, and the WAF and CDN in front. Payments and invoicing run through Stripe with automatic reconciliation, and mail through Resend with inbound mail routed into the platform's own mailboxes.

TypeScript throughout, with automated tests run before every release, and no third-party trackers.

A web application firewall sits in front of every site and the platform. Bot protection on public forms is checked on the server as well as in the browser, with limits on sign-in and payment attempts.

Role-based access means staff, finance, certification, chapters, assessors and companies each see only their part. Every change is written to an audit log, outgoing mail passes a guard, and the control room shows the health of every system and scheduled job.

My role

Architect and developer.

I designed, built and run the platform, working with the association's leadership. Every release is reviewed, tested and verified live before it ships.
